Abstract

Language is used and best learned in interaction. The adoption of communicative approach in language teaching reshapes teaching by promoting language use in interaction with other people. Classroom interaction opens chances for the students to practice negotiation for meaning, opportunities for teachers to provide corrective feedback and scaffolding. Language use in interaction leads to language learning; in classroom setting students can learn through interaction with peers and teacher. Of course, the teacher should consider some cultural backgrounds to facilitate the interaction. Shifting from IRE to IRF makes a significant change as the teacher humbly accepts his/her role as a learning partner by opening the channel of ‘follow-up’ rather than evaluating the students’ responses based on his/her perspective. The teacher is advised to ‘follow up the responses by asking the students to expand their thinking, justify or clarify their opinion or make connection to their own experience’ (Wells, 1993). Small group discussion is recommended. I applied this IRF in my Reading 4 class by asking the students to find answers to comprehension questions in a group of three. Not only did it give chances for them to talk without much anxiety, especially for the shy ones, but it also enhanced their learning as everyone had their turn to talk and contribute to the small group. Nevertheless it must be noted that the success of IRF in classroom depends a lot on the teacher in his/her willingness to encourage and take learner initiative; a kind of humble realization that teacher is not the sole source of information.
